Illustrating for children

I have a lot of projects happening at once at the moment. From a novel to multiple children’s board books and a pile of short stories I want to finish and submit for competitions.

So when I’m overwhelmed I find that drawing is the thing that calms me down and reduces my stress and worry.

This weekend I challenged myself to create some artwork for children using the kawaii style that I love.

My first idea was to create a block of 9 images of a star character with different facial expressions. Sounds easy but actually you need to think about more than just a smile or a frown. There’s shading, mouth expression, eyes, eyebrows. Lots to think about. I’ve exported my work and a copy is here for you to see.

During my research for the stars I saw lots of kid friendly kawaii planet drawings that I loved, so I’ve drawn my own planets and stars as another set of 9.
