Weird Words part 10 – Merrymaking

Welcome to part 10 of my Weird Words series, and part 4 of my festive Weird Words.

Many of the words found for this project have seemed pretty usual rather than unusual, but it’s only when I consider how and if I’d ever use them that I understand they are becoming as old and forgotten as me.

Todays word might seem redundant to some, or very obvious and well-known to others, but have you ever used it? Maybe I’m in the minority, but I know I haven’t, so here goes…

Merrymaking

The Cambridge Dictionary describes Merrymaking as…

the act of celebrating and having an enjoyable time.

The eating, drinking, and merrymaking went on late into the night.

The Merriam Webster website describes Merrymaking as…

1 gay or festive activity CONVIVIALITY

2 a convivial occasion FESTIVITY

And I would probably say….

“Can someone pass me some more cheese and biscuits please? I’m too tired from all the merrymaking.”

However deep you’ve dipped your toes into the festive water so far this year (or even if they’re still dry), I hope you’re letting some merrymaking in.

Thanks for reading! 💜🎄🎄
