Weird Words Part 12 – Scurryfunge

Welcome everyone. Here, as promised, is another edition of the Weird Words festive series.

Today I’ve chosen a word thought to originate from the late 18th Century. That’s right, I’m conducting proper (vague) research in order to bring you these words so you can impress (bore) family and friends with your vast and unusual festive vocabulary (nothing can really be relied upon, but I have provided links so you can check my research yourself! 😉).

I’m really enjoying this foray into long forgotten words relating loosely to Christmas, and I’m pleased to say I’ll have words for you to learn right up until New Year! The rate I’m going you might have words until new year 2024!

Anyway, here is today’s festive weird word. I hope you enjoy it.

Scurryfunge

Collins Dictionary describes Scurryfunge as…

A hasty tidying of the house between the time you see the neighbour coming and the time they knock on the door.

The Urban Dictionary describes Scurryfinge as…

A hasty tidying of the house between the time you see a neighbor and the time he/she knocks on the door.

So, I’ll be desperately avoiding the need to scurryfunge this year by repeatedly nagging my family to tidy up after themselves. On Christmas morning I’ll spend all day Scurryfunging to get ripped wrapping paper out of the eyesight of anyone on FaceTime!

Thanks for reading 💜🎄
