Weird Words part 13 – Krampus

Welcome back to another festive edition of my weird words project.

Today I’ve found a word that I think a few people already know, but here in the UK we rarely talk about the Krampus around advent time, so I have to assume there are a few others like me who don’t know anything about it.

After reading a few pages online it seems the krampus is possibly a kindred spirit of mine. There is debate over whether he’s a good or bad creature, and it seems his mood at this time of year can be volatile – all things that fully resonate with me.

So, if (like me) you didn’t already know about him, here is a bit more information on Krampus.

Krampus

Wikipedia describes Krumpus as…

Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure in the Central and Eastern Alpine folklore of Europe who, during the Advent season, scares children who have misbehaved. Assisting Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus the pair visit children on the night of 5 December.

Encyclopedia Britannica describes the creature as…

Krampus, in central European popular legend, a half-goat, half-demon monster that punishes misbehaving children at Christmastime.

So, although I don’t spend any of my time scaring all the naughty kids, I do find myself acting like my own version of the Krampus, insisting that Christmas messiness is cleared up every single day throughout December.

Festivities should be fun, but I hate the mess our daughter makes. I’m such a Krampus!

Thanks for reading 🎄❄️💜
