Haiku hope 29 – A fresh start

Hi everyone and welcome to another Haiku Hope as part of the COPE campaign.

This time I wanted to write about the fresh start everyone seems to force on us at this time of year from an alternative viewpoint.

Yes, I understand that the new year is a point to make goals, set plans and start a new page for many people, but for some of us it’s nothing more than another evening falling asleep in front of the TV and waking up dreary eyed the following morning, not remembering it’s the first of January until well into the afternoon.

Some of us don’t need a new year to set a challenge and stick to it or (more likely) give up on it. In fact, statistically speaking, 43% of people making a new years resolutions in 2023 were expected to give up on them within a month [1].

This haiku is dedicated to the hope (of lack of) that we feel in the new year. It’s dedicated to people who, like me, don’t know how or where to start with goals and can’t stand the idea of failure if things don’t go to plan.

A fresh start

January the first.

This year will be so different.

Start with a lay in.

**********

Start as you mean to go on? Not really. We rarely get a lay in, and the very idea of still being in bed past 6.30am is a pipedream. Maybe a lay in is the more realistic goal we should set ourselves in 2024. God knows my goals over the last 3 years have failed catastrophically. Maybe I’m just reaching too far.

Remember if you need more distractions then there are more jokes on my Hold Humour page, as well as haikus on Haiku Hope, awful poems on Crap Poems and odd language in Weird Words. I also have a page dedicated to stress hacks and pages with many other distracting ideas to try all within the COPE campaign section of this website.

If you’re struggling with your mental health there’s a list of places you can call (including during the holidays) for help, signposting and to be heard on my mental health and suicide prevention support lines page.

Thanks for visiting and happy new year!
