Weird Words Part 4 – Pluviophile

I’m back with another weird word! Apologies for the delay posting these, but I’ve had so much Haiku and Poem inspiration lately that the ‘words’ have gone by the wayside.

Anyway, at the time of writing this post (8am on a Saturday) we are being warned repeatedly about an incoming heatwave that may surpass any temperature we’ve seen before. We might get to 40 degrees and the Met Office are worried about the safety of the public.

Before I give you today’s weather-related Weird Word, there is some advice on the Met Office website on ways of coping in this heat. They have a dedicated ‘Tips for keeping cool in hot weather‘ page that might be useful if you are concerned or need some ideas.

So even though this sunshine is gorgeous and inviting, please be careful, be sensible, use sunscreen, use the shade and most of all, stay safe.

Today’s Weird Word has a lovely connection to the hot weather that I just couldn’t resist…

Pluviophile

What a beautiful word. Before knowing the full meaning I instantly enjoyed saying it.

The Urban Dictionary defines a Pluviophile as…

People that love rain are called pluviophiles. The word pluviophile comes from the Latin word “pluvial,” which means rain, and “phile,” which denotes a thing or a person. Therefore, a pluviophile is a lover of rain, or someone that finds joy and peace of mind during the rainy days.

So, despite this stunning sunshine and a level of heat we probably crave in the winter months, right now I’d class myself as a full-blown pluviophile. I’d wish for nothing more than the smells, chills and sounds of rainfall on the window next to me.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Stay safe. On scorcher days I lock the apartment up and put the fan on. Read a post from someone in the UK that was putting frozen bottles of water in front of the fan and getting great results. At night you can wet a towel and put it over yourself. Good luck.
